Some helpful facts regarding Asbestos:

  • CT State law and the US Environmental Protection Agency state that before renovation or demolition of a particular area, the building owner is required to have an asbestos building inspection asbestos removal by a licensed contractor.
     

  • The building owner is required to ensure that asbestos disposal is in a landfill approved for asbestos.
     

  • Only licensed asbestos contractors can legally remove, encapsulate, or disturb asbestos.
     

  • The general or renovation contractor, as well as the building owner, can be held liable when asbestos is illegally disturbed.
     

  • When the asbestos material is more than 10 linear or 25 square feet the building owner or licensed contractor is required to notify the CT Department of Public Health at least ten days before the asbestos material is disturbed. In an emergency the CT DPH must be notified within 24 hours.
