Some helpful facts are:
The CT State law and the US Environmental Protection Agency state the building owner is required to have an asbestos building
inspection and to have the asbestos removed by licensed contractor. Before
renovation of a particular area, or before a demolition permit is given.
The building owner is required to have
the asbestos disposed of in a landfill approved for asbestos.
Only licensed asbestos contractors can
legally remove, encapsulate, or disturb asbestos.
The general or renovation contractor, as
well as the building owner, can be held responsible when asbestos is
illegally disturbed.
When the asbestos material is more than 10 linear or 25 square feet the building
owner or licensed contractor is required to notify the
CT Department of Public Health at least ten days before the asbestos
material is disturbed. In an emergency the State must be notified within
24 hours.
